On the bottom blue task bar I have an icon with 2 computers with a red cross through them. can anyone please tell me what this is? When I point to it it reads Local area connection a network cable is unplugged. When I click on it under a window called Network Tasks it gives 3 choices 1/ create a new connection. 2/ set up a home or small office network 3/ change windows firewall settings. I am not on a network.

It's just the icon showing your network connection. as you're not connected, it's how you described, if you are connected, the cross goes and the screen of one of the computers lights up.

Although not sure how you managed to post that if you're not on a network. unless you have wireless...
I have exactly the same thing on my computer.
The local genius in the computer shop says just to forget about it.
I've no idea how it got there but I would like it just to go away if there's no use for it.
My system was once upon a time part of a network but not any more. Don't know if that's significant or not.
It sounds like maybe your pc was networked to another pc at some time and now its not, pc still thinks it is and is telling you that the other pc is unplugged, go to network connections and delete anything you are not using.

Thanks for all the answers I received.
behappy87 :- I thought being on a network meant you shared your computer with others. No I am not on wireless I am on cable, will it mean I am not connected to a telephone line? and my PC has never been networked to another PC.
Thanks RATTER15.......I took your suggestion and just hit the "disable" button.
Problem solved!
