How do they work? Is it some very clever computer program that translates the words into type?

If it is done "live" then it must be a computer program.

However it does not always get it right.

I was watching Sky Sports with the subtitles on a week or so back and someone talked about the old Arsenal manager Arsene Wegner.

The subtitles came up with "arson finger"

Thanks Guilbert. On the news, they must have all the likely names preprogrammed as they tend to get them right.
The subtitles are produced by voice recognition software. However, the software is not very good, and the checkers are so slow that by the time they eventually get it right, usually after three or four attempts, one has almost forgotten the original text. The best laugh since The Two Ronnies is to watch Breakfast TV on BBC One and see the uncorrected mistakes, eg Episcopalian thunder in the weather forecast!
