I have received a WinZip file attachment to an email, when I try to open I am told by Winzip that my 'free trial' is over and I must now purchase it.
Is this necessary or can I open it another way - I'm using Windows XP. Thanks.

There are umpteen free compression apps around. Try filzip. My tight fisted company told me to use it because it was free.

I just installed 4shared, but the WinZip file still doesn't open and still get a request to subscribe to WinZip.
Right click the file and select "Open With"
You should be able to select 4Shared from the list
If you do not wish to pay for Winzip, uninstall it and then associate your new app with zip files.

OG; That was a good idea, I removed WinZip from my computer and then tried opening the file again and got a warning from Windows that the file was harmful and should not be opened, I had a slight feeling there was something not kosher about it- it purports to be my monthly statement from my phone company but it looks slightly different from the usual ones.
