Problems with writing emails in BT Yahoo

I have a strange problem with the email program in BT Yahoo Mail.

When I am writing the body of the text, if I use italics, I can't get back to non-italics for the rest of the message. I click the symbol in the formatting
but it makes no difference....it just carries on in italics.

What am I doing wrong ?
