Pc games network play

Afaik PC games had network/multiplayer long before consoles.But were these PC games playable online? given how slow net speeds were back over a decade ago?
Also did anyone actually even play/host online as some of titles are very obscure and i guess at best only a handful play rather than the thousands? for console games ? Is there a dedicated website , community that hosts old network Pc games ?

PCs were able to access multi user games from some times ago.
Personally I prefer to play solo games on my own PC so can't really help with your other questions.
