Why does a CRB take so long?

Surely in this day and age a governmental agency computer can search all relevant databases for information on a person in a matter of seconds, so why does it take weeks and sometimes months to do a CRB search?

One would imagine that an employer could do this search online or even contact an agency authorised to do these searches and it could be done at least the same day!

There is no correct answer for that im afraid, I think this is the bit that can take ages as it may sit on someone desk and wait until they find time to deal with it, you have been waiting a long time, I hope you get it very soon.
