3 network dongle to set wifi

Hi a friend has a 3 network dongle wich is rigged up to a booster box and works great the problem he having is he has got a vodafone router for dongles but he can get the pc on vista to reconize the router but cant get the dongle to connect to internet to make wifi. he can just plug dongle into pc and works fine so what are we doing wrong is it because it a vodafone router tha using a 3 network dongle wont work or what is it....any help be great....
