Why, when trying to access my properties box on windows xp home screen it disappears straight away? The same happens when hitting the power off / restart option. Thank u.

This sounds like one of those 'joke' programs that someone sent you.

Have you tried hitting Esc key, or Delete while holding down Ctrl and Alt to see what's running?
