I would say intel has the edge on processors at the moment.
Though what on earth are you thinking of doing with your computer to need a quad core processor, it maybe overkill and you will never use the full power of either of your choices. most real world stuff people do with their computers it's not the processor that is the bottleneck
i.e. a mega fast powerful CPU will not speed up your internet browsing as it depends on your connection speed.

The AMD Athlon 64 x2 is in a £450 PC from Comet and the Intel Quad Core is in a £500 PC from Comet. I didn't think spending that amount on a new computer was too extravagant.
Actually I suppose amount of RAM is of major importance, and if you get a PC with 3GB RAM, which the above two do, then you get these high performance processors.

I'd go for the quad core then, but I doubt you would really notice any difference in using them.. as you say ram is important but bear in mind other parts have a effect to an extent depending on what you want to do, for example if you play games...... get the best graphics card you can
