Can't open attachments

over last few days have been unable to open e-mail attachments - am clicking on open but nothing happens - not even a message

Can't open attachments.

Hotmail attachments

Please help. I can't open up any files sent to my hotmail account, it just says 'windows cannot open this file' - and then prompts me to look through a list of websites that have suitable software....
