My notebook using Vista has a touchpad and a miniature wired mouse both of which work. As the mouse is rather small, I bought a standard sized mouse (Tesco) and connected it in place of the miniature. I had to use a PS/2 to USB adapter as the notebook doesn't have a PS/2 socket.
The laptop doesn't appear to recognize it.
Can anyone please help?

drivers?

I've just read your question AFTER typing all the other guff !!! so I'm leaving it ;-(
Missed the magic word ... LAPTOP
sometimes the touchpad or pimpley thing has an option to disable an external mouse (doesn't always work with all mices (moose?) so you get a conflicting result with a replacement.

also it can matter when if you plug it in before or after booting

there is a usb option in the BIOS ... legacy support .... it shouldn't .... but sometimes it does matter if this is set.

often they come with a driver disc .... or a website to d/l drivers.

a standard mouse normally doesn't need drivers .... only if it does something clever ... but if it has them ...
(with USB the correct order is ... drivers ... reboot ... insert device).

can you try it in another machine?
(also .... however stupid this sounds ... try it in ALL your USB slots I've had a couple of probs where doing this seemed to cure it)

in my experience ... the USB doofer works better than the ps2 .... some of the newer dual and quad mobos don't seem to be too happy with ps2

However vista has a known dislike for all things USB (the fix is part of the imminent SP1)

"However vista has a known dislike for all things USB" - and there was I thinking that Vista just disliked computers and their users, ACtheTROLL...
lol
it's only a mild aversion

just think what the next version will be like .....
and all the ppl ..... booo hoooo I wish I could downgrade to vista !!!!!

my philosophy is that if the perfect OS ever comes out .... it will be the last day I earn my living from this game.
I LOVE VISTA!! long may it need a service pack

Thank you ACtheTROLL and rojash.
I can't verify if the touchpad disables an external mouse but it accepts the very small wired mouse that came with the laptop.
Have tried plugging in before and after booting and tried different USB slots.
This Tesco mouse is a plug and play and therefore doesn't have a separate driver.
Have tried it on another m/c and it works.
I guess I have to accept your final conclusion that Visa dislikes all things USB.
Strangely though, the laptop accepts an optical cordless mouse connected through an USB slot.
Confused.......Curtis.
