I have Win XP (Home). When I download a photo from the Internet it uses My Pictures initially as the default folder to save it in. I then have to use the drop down menu to select the folder I want the pic to go into. How do I change the default folder from My Pictures to one I've created on my desktop? Thanx.

Get your self a download manager (such as leechget). Then you can specify a default download directory for each different file type.

Having said that, it would be better practice to put your folder somewhere other than the desktop (for example, you could create it as one of any number of subfolders in "My Pictures"), and just create a shortcut to it on the desktop.
