Saving as a smaller file

I usually mess around with scanned pictures on paint, but can't save them as smaller jpg files anymore as the only format options that come up when saving are 24-bit bitmap, 256 colour bitmap, 16 colour bitmap and monocolour bitmap. My Paint used to have a Jpeg option as well but it's gone. How can I avoid saving files over a 1000 kb big? Where had my jpeg option gone?

Stop mucking about with paint, which is ridiculous for photo-editing, and download the free PaintShop Pro 7 (it's basically a free version of Photoshop).
and while you're downloading... for quick basic image handling, get yourself a copy of IrfanView plus plugins. It will handle and convert most image extentions, very easy to use, has many frequently used features and it is absolutely free.
