Do you have access to another screen to see if it's a problem with the monitor or the graphics card?

Is it a CRT (normal, big) monitor or TFT (thin, flat)?

mattfox..... Its a thin flat screen , and no I dont have another one i can check on. When I print a picture etc , you cant see the line, so Im thinking its the screen itself. (hope that makes sense).

Its a packard bell, windows XP. Do you think mattfox, that its prob on its way to the scrapeyard???
lol no your comp shudnt be ready for scrapping just yet, although you do need to get hold of another moniter to have a look and see if its that or not, have you asked your friends? if the green line still occurs on another moniter, then you need to try another graphics card. although if doing this urself be very careful because of the static in ur body can fry pc components, better to ask a pc friendly mate to help you out. just out of interest is the line there on the screen where windows xp is loading up? or just once ur logged on?

Yeh, as soon as I switched it on , you can see the line. and when I move the desktop icons, they go BEHIND the line.
Sounds like a problem with just the monitor then.

Double check to make sure it's not still in warranty... if it's out of warranty, have a look on somewhere like www.ebuyer.com or www.dabs.com as you can get TFT monitors relatively cheaply these days....
Graphics card. I recently had a similar experience. I don't think TFT monitors fail in the way you describe (green line), but may display the odd dead pixel which will be red and barely noticeable. Take the card out now! I left mine and watched it progressively deteriorate so that text was illegible, then pictures would not display, finally (the last straw) my computer would shut down entirely when lots of graphical information changed abruptly - as surfing from one site to another.

where abouts is the graphics card?
I can only tell you what I did with my computer as that's all the experience I've had. A friend fitted my graphics card which had it's own socket to plug the monitor into. So then I had two monitor sockets on the back of the pc (that and the original). All I did was open the case and looked where the monitor was plugged into, a circuit board that plugs into the main board (graphics card). It's easy just to unplug that and remove. Mine was held in by a little screw on the case and a small clip on the main board connector .Then plug the monitor back into the original socket. I had to adjust the screen resolution settings but that's very simple to do. Sorry I can't be more help.
