I'm looking to put my computers on a network using a router but if I do so this will mean that my computer will not be accessible through the internet as it will now have its own internal IP as well as and internet IP. What can I do? Thx Ben.

If you connect to the internet via a modem and to the router via a network card then you can have one IP address for each, your ISP dynamically assigns the IP address for your dial up connection, and you can assign a static address for the network card.
