This morning I have been driven to distraction with constant messages from AVG detection saying that a threat has been removed. The threat is JS/FakeCodec which AVG has removed umpteen times this morning.

I have done a full AVG scan and a Malware Bytes scan and yet this message keeps popping up but only when using AB.

Windows 7 Google Chrome.

When I switched to IE the messages stopped nut AB is so slow on there.

There must be a reason. Is your virus the same, JS/Fakecodec. Every half minute of so?
That is the one Sam...
Question Author
Mine's different then. Not a Java thing.
tried everything agchristie, uninstalled chrome, re installed chrome !!
think I might call it a night

Anyway, I'm off. Hopefully, tomorrow will be better. Goodnight.

Goodnight, Sam.
Tilly, I was asked to download a java file, but my system blocked it. I then downloaded AVG which removed two threats including the codec file you stated...
It is a total pain Sam.
Night Tilly x
having to use a different browser agchristie to stay logged on, very slow it is. fingers crossed everythings ok for tomorrow
Dont bank on it Sam but good luck!
"This happened to me, so I switched my computer off and back on again and guess what, it worked"

From what I understand the malware virus deeply embeds itself into the computer to hide from antivirus detectors so it may have reared its ugly head once or twice but is possibly hiding from your anti virus detectors so will do whatever it's programmed to do whilst hidden away.

I've received the "java" one several times after logging on here I think and I have ran Microsoft Security Essentials and Malwarebytes and I've even downloaded Avast and checked my downloaded programmes on advice of malwaretips.com but still nothing detected.

I'm starting to wonder whether these free antiviruses are as effective as they claim or is this just a new type of virus that they haven't been made aware of yet or made their antivirus codes strong enough to defeat the virus yet and are working on it?

What's the solution?

Henrietta, AVG did detect and remove the virus but it was doing so every thirty seconds and kept telling me so. I am using my tablet at the moment and so far, so good.
I found the 'problem' is that after deleting the offending file AVG advised strongly that I did not proceed to AB but closed the window. So I could neither read posts nor make any

All seems normal this morning though

I'll try later. Thank you, dzug.
It popped up again on my laptop after ten mins....McAfee detected it and blocked also ran malware.....ED needs to deal with this attack on AB he doesn't seem to come in at weekend....
I have AVG free version and am on IE no problem here at all.
It was Chrome that gave me problems so I uninstalled it, IE works perfectly.
I did have the paid of version of AVG on trial but I prefer the free version, it is less intrusive , just does the job with out making itself known.
Spoke too soon, just got 2 detections both removed.
It is associated with the Java update pop up as that came up as well.
Bit of info here,

http://www.avgthreatlabs.com/virus-and-malware-information/info/js-fakecodec/

I use Firefox with pop-ups blocked. I also use Adblock Plus but disable it for AB. At the current moment Adblock Plus has been re-activated for AB until I get a re-assurance from the AB Editor that all the Site is "Clean"

My AV is Comodo free.

So far, I have not received any messages about anything.
