I was watching an episode of - ' can i have a P please bob' ( incidentally , the years have flown , haven't they ?)

Anyway , why did they have two contestants playing against one contestant ?

Not really sure but the 2 people had 1 extra space to fill.
It seemed a good idea at the time, and it allowed a choice whether you wished to carry your friend, or go it alone against two.
Just variety I guess - asMattk advises, the double team had an extra space to fill to even things up a little.

And no, Bob Holness did NOT play saxaphone on Baker Street!!!!!!
As far as I can remember the single contestant didn't have to anser as many question to make it across the board, the duo having to answer at least one, possibly 2 more to make their connection.

Bob used to say it was to see if two heads were actually better than one.
I might be wrong but I have a feeling the single players were Champion more often than the pairs.
