Over the years various children have downloaded program's music pictures and stuff to the home computer. It is now virtually full. I have removed as many program's as I can but it is still only showing 1% free space.
Will buying a separate USB connected hard drive allow me to download some of my stuff and free up space to allow defrag .etc which needs 15% free space?
Thanks guys.

You could transfer some onto a separate drive but I think this may be a good ideato see what you can get rid of altogether. If you delete any music, videos or pictures make sure you empty the recycle bin afterwards. It may also be that your computer has kept several restore files. I'd start by sorting all your files in size order and seeing whether there are any big ones you can get rid of
