Incorrect Sum Occuring

Have come across a strange Sum Result. Am selecting as usual the range of cells (4 in this case) I wish to ADD up but in this case it will not include the top row. Have done many such sum cases over the years but have never experienced this. My worksheet is Excel 2010. Has anyone any ideas and thanks in advance for any help.

Silly thought, but is the top cell formatted as text, or something out of the ordinary ? Not that I have Excel 2010 to try. Does it happen if you move the data elsewhere and retry ?

Which function are you trying to use? There's SUM but not ADD.

Am using the SUM function
Firstly, the most basic thing - you do have [i]=[i] before SUM(... in the formula bar? (need to ask to get that out of the way)

Secondly - what error does it give?

Thirdly - are you selecting the required cells by using the mouse or are you typing the cell references into the formula bar?
the italics didn't appear so just to clarify the 1st point - your formula does start with the equals sign i.e. =SUM(...
Do you have a hidden row?

OG may be on to something. In XL 2003 that scenario misses out the top row

Thanks OG, for some unknown reason, it was formatted in text how I do not know as it was a new work sheet. Also In Excel 2010 if there is something wrong with the cell, a mark appears in the top left hand corner of the square and on selecting that square a small diamond with a ! in it shows. On clicking on the diamond I have just discovered, thanks to you, that it acually tells you whats wrong and suggests how to correct the error. Up to today when this error sign has appeared, I have just clicked on the Ignore th Error but in this case on looking more closely at the information showing it told me it was formatted in Text and did I want to change it to a number format which I clicked on and Hey Presto it worked so perhaps in future will look at the message more closly. So thanks for all the replies and especially OG obviously a far more cleverer OG than this OG.
