external cd dvd rom drive

hi i took a dvd cdwr drive out of old laptop wich was fully working no problem and put it into a external case usb. but it loads the software were firs luged in but is not reconized in my computer.when plugged in says usb mass storage device (ready to use) and intito inic-1511 usb device (ready to use) so why wont it work i just assumed it be a plug and play type thing like doing a external hard drive is.

You shouldn't need to install drivers for it, it sounds like the USB case is being recognised OK but it's not picking up it has a drive installed in it. Are you sure the drive has connected to the case OK.

How do i go about knowing what and were to find the drivers...and would i have to do this on every pc i plug into then as that kind of puts a damper on it really.what and how do i find the driver please

Hi chuck yes it has ive double checked to be sure but seems ok,i have since tried on a old laptop with xp on it and it comes up there as a e drive but doesnt read disc or anything just says error so do u think it could be a dud case im dealing with as tried on my pc with windows 7 32bit tried another with vista 32bit and none seem to even bring up in my comp except xp but still no joy on it working.i also agree it should just be plug and play.and im 100 per cent possitive that the dvd rom works as only just took it out of old lappy
