There are different tests that go back different periods. Mine seem similar to yours, a few centuries. My OH got one going back to the Rift Valley, and with a stop to pick up some Denisovan DNA from somewhere round Russia (but less than average Neanderthal).
Also, they may well update their results in a year or two, as they get more results in that allow them to refine the figures. (This will also vary depending on how big the company who did yours is. The more customers, the more accurate - in theory.) I had ancestors from Bulgaria and Gabon at one stage, who have since vanished.
I used My Heritage,(£35) just curiosity following a bit of family gossip. Based in the USA but I might get it 're done with Ancestry as they seem to break the results down further. The results make sense to some extent as a lot of my family are from Essex, and East Anglia so Scandinavians and North Western Europeans would be fairly common in those areas. The Irish, Scottish Welsh thing ties in with the family stories of arrest grandmother who took in Irish lodgers during the war...
These DNA tests don’t necessarily prove your ancestry.
Basically the DNA test looks at a sequence of your chromosome genetic markers and compares it to common chromosome sequences within known ethnic groups, living today – and makes the false claim that this proves you have some ancestry connection with a particular geographic location.
This youtube video explains more, and is well worth a watch if you have had such a test done or are considering one.
The ethnicity results are only as good as the core database. As more people test, your results may change.
I've been studying genetic dna for about 4 years now. Ive found that the genetic mix constantly changes, this is as more people test. However, by using DNA and some indepth paper research I have been able to identify my previously unknown g grsndfather.
