Decathlete Daley Thompson or Sir Steve Redgrave? Or somebody else, say Dame Kelly Holmes? Their respective achievements are here.

Personally I would like to see Daley Thompson do it.

Read the DM link ladybirder very impressive medal hauls by both men but, one thing does stand out to me, that is the word pairs at the side of most if not all of Redgraves medals. Not so with Thompson he did it all on his own, top class, stand out alone Olympian, I am with you on this one.

Tanni Grey Thompson
I met Tanni Grey Thompson on a cruise.................she's hilarious.
Bradley Wiggins my arse!

Daley was an all rounder, Bradley rides a bike, no contest
Can't Daley ride a bike then?

Thanks mm, absolutely right. He was magnificent.
The honour ought to go to an *Olympian* who triumphed on more than one occasion........and we haven't had many of those in recent times.

Bradley Wiggins (and I 'do' take your point, Elvis) has triumphed at the last two games and will (hopefully) take a World Class Event this weekend, is surely better than Linford, Sally Gunnell or Denise Lewis.

Sir Steve Redgrave or Sir Matthew Pinsent must also be very close contenders.

Dame Tanny Grey Thompson 'must' be the default selection for the Paralympics!
so a double Olympic medalist who whooped Hitlers ass is a no go then? Boo hiss to that!

And not Daley jth? You no like?
How about..... Just to please all...Sir Roger Bannister?

First man to run a mile under 4 minutes, A true gentleman and one hell of a kinky name
I just think that someone who has been successful since 1980/1984 may have more relevance to modern audiences........
Dotty they have found a job for Dot Tyler she is to fire the gun at the start of the Marathon, I think at 92 jumping out of helicopter could be tricky, come to think of it I would not like to be on front row of marathon start.
I think the Queen ought to do it, it's her Jubilee year, after all :-)

No support for her I'm afraid dotty. She's 92 and not too many people will have heard of her.
Yes, the short list is agreeable. At one time Dame Mary Peters, David Hemery and David Wilkie might also have got a mention.
I think they are waiting to see if Bradley Wiggins wins TdF this weekend, truly a great acheivement if he does - so they will ask him to do it.
Nobody has mentioned Duncan Goodhew, what about him?
How about David Bond, gold medallist from the 1948 Olympics - before the era of taking drugs like Smarties?

Please don't let it be Daley Thompson. I remember when he won Sports Personality of the Year and turned up dressed jogging bottoms and swore! We've heard nothing from him for years, expect he's been sucking up to his friend Seb Coe (can't bring myself to say Lord). I think it should be Becks - great ambassador for UK, I think.
