What's The Point of Prayer?

Why do religious people pray?

It seems like a singularly pointless thing to do. If God is omnipresent and omnipotent, then He knows your deepest desires you don't have to tell Him He already knows doesn't He?

Actually, isn't praying the most presumptuous thing imaginable? Surely you're asking God to change His plan to benefit you specifically?

birdie....prayer is not used only by the religious........chanting, prayer and meditation have been used by numerous cultures and groups eg. wicca for hundreds of years and can be viewed as a positive force to make changes in the physical world.

If you have a mind to research quantum phisics you will find some interesting thinking in relation to prayer...try

some really interesting stuff here at the edge of reason.....stretch your mind!
Saw this had just been answered, so butted in - not really interested in religion in any way (I think the world would be a better place without to be honest....)

Anway, that aside, I reckon it's just an emotion thing. People need to pray because it makes them feel better.

It's like me doing the lottery. I know I have little chance of winning, but the fact that I do it gives me a reason to hope for something better. I need that hope to help me get by, and others probably need to pray cos it makes them feel better.
I pray for strength to cope in a difficult situation. I don't pray for fame or fortune, that's up to me to make these things happen, but I can pray for courage to try and make them happen.
Since reading this question I have decided,

1- Not to take any medicine ever as there is no point afterall it can not save me from death.

2- Not to say "I love you" to my wife, kids, parents and many more, afterall they should know I do so what's the point?

Keyplus Beautifully misunderstood yet again. Your capacity for misunderstanding continues to be boundless.

Point 1 Utterly irrelevant. This was was neither a question about death nor medication, yet you seem to think your comment is relevant to the discussion.

Point 2 We are talking about God here Keyplus. Not your wife or your kids or your Grandmother.

This is God we're talking about. I'm pretty sure that even you would accept that your wife doesn't know exactly what you're thinking. Same goes for your kids, etc.

He should know exactly what's on your mind shouldn't He?

And if so, why pray to Him when He already knows?

What's the point of prayer?
who says God knows what's on your mind? Is this in the Bible somewhere, or did you just make it up?
Question Author
Razzle09 Thanks for your answer.

I stretch my mind frequently thanks. Actually, I'm very interested in quantum mechanics and how it relates to our physical world. I've thoroughly enjoyed The Fabric Of Reality by David Deutsch. I don't remember anything about prayer in it. Maybe you could recommend some of the books you've read?
Thank you birdie for that answer...I was just about to post and ask for my stars...lol Will get back to you with books if that's okay. Have alcohol taken and would not be in the right frame of mind to recommend..

Jno Of course I didn't just make it up. Surely, the creator of the universe you know, the one who creates matter out of nothing and life out of the inanimate knows our thoughts and desires.

If He can be deceived by His flesh and blood creations, what sort of God is He?
why would a creator god also be a mind-reading god? The Romans might have imagined that Jupiter hurled thunderbolts, they never supposed he knew what they were thinking. I created a son, but I can't read his mind.
Question Author
Razzle09 Thanks you your answer. I'm extremely interested in this subject. And I can thoroughly recommend The Fabric Of Reality - A truly amazing book.

Have a good un.
birdie..thanks for the post...the subject is always foremost on my mind....will get back to you. :-)
Question Author
Jno It depends which religion you're talking about I suppose.

For instance, in the Christian religion, God is deemed to have Omniscience.

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Omniscient

The bottom line is that if your God cannot see into your mind and know your true intentions, then He's a pretty ineffectual God isn't He?
Question Author
Jno I have to take issue with your comment, ...I created a son, but I can't read his mind.

But you're not a God are you?

Although, I'm sure you are to your son. And quite right too.

But we're speaking about the greatest force in the universe - God (if you believe such things) could literally wind up existence by a click of his (massive?) fingers (if He has fingers...?)

And yet you're questioning whether the creator of the universe knows what's on your mind...

By suggesting that God cannot read minds, then you're suggesting that He isn't all powerful. And logically, that cannot be.

Wow! Just found this.

Sorry if this offends anyone but...

Birdie...if you will please separate the concept of God and the practice of prayer and then you will be able to integrate the two things. Consider what is meant by prayer our understanding of the practice, the ritual and how it is performed or initiated.

It is the practice of prayer that is linked to quantum mechanics!

Prayer precedes Christianity and other religions.

I believe and I could be wrong that much is musunderstood regarding the understanding of the practice and the intention of prayer.

It is, in my thinking not a request but an opportunity to change the reality of things.

Major religions are based on assumptions and therein can lie the difficulties that we face when we try to 'get our heads round things'.

Sorry this may appear a bit cryptic but I don't have the language to form a narrative that offers further explanation.

May the Divine be with you in all the places that you walk.

try to look at it this way, would you have a best friend without ever talking to him/her?? of course not ,well praying to the father is the same thing! when you first enter a relationship with christ ,your learning and getting to know him ,but when you get closer by talking to him everyday you actully feel the closeness ! and then when its time to ask him for something wheather it be for you or a friend or someone that you have met online you dont feel like your talking to a stranger you feel like your talking to a best friend which he is
With respect Roy I would disagree.

That is prayer as understood and practised from the Christian point of view and it is a valid one; however the power of prayer is not exclusive to the religious. It is used very effectively by the non religious also... :-)
