I have been an Atheist all my adult life, so I am not remotely surprised by this. I have also worked on the BSA survey for 8 years and seen the percentage of people describe themselves as not religious grow over that time.

Anybody else surprised ?

Okay.
I think Chris is right. People are far more happy to describe themselves as having no religion now. I have helped many many elderly people fill in forms and they nearly always claim a religion, saying that they don't actually follow it, but "you have to put something". Being called an atheist used to be a bit of an insult I think.
I think we're more relaxed about it in the UK but yes -- "atheist" can be an insult, especially so in the US. Several US presidents will have used it in deriding the Soviet regime, for example.
// I was born in 1963 and they wouldn't let my mum into the delivery room until she stated a religion for the baby. I was born in the corridor. //

The main one flows southwest through the Colorado Plateau country of western Colorado, southeastern Utah and northwestern Arizona where it flows through the Grand Canyon. It turns south near Las Vegas, Nevada, forming the Arizona–Nevada border in Lake Mead and the Arizona–California border below Hoover Dam.
