That's a new position, the A-Bish of Barnstaple - I suppose that the vicar of Clovelly is now a full Bishop?
Have you lost it solvit, or been on the communion holy-water bottle tonight?

Pope of Polperro ?

I doubt very much thet the arch Bish has a congregation. And I don't think the CofE has invested in land, it's just theirs, historically to use as they see fit.

That's under the Theocrat of Truro, dave, the Archbishop of Barnstaple reports to the Eleveated Eternity of Exeter. We keep our boundary, the Tamar, between us clearly divided, the Cornish ready with staffs, crosses and heavenly lightning, also our wind fans ready to blow the invaders back.

I think that must be what the Archbish of Barnstorming is trying to achieve, crafty.

I presume Solvitquick means the Archdeacon of Barnstable.

What a shame that the reverend gentleman isn't really a bishop. We could have invented loads of humorous references to bish-bashing.

Oh, naomi, you are killing our sport! The Elevated Eternity of Exeter used to have the See down here too - until the 1870s, the 1st Bish of Truro, Benson, getting the boot up to the AoC.....our only AoC. The current one is, apparently, in the batting line up for the job, I think because of his age, as he doesn't seem to be that prominent in the community (wit the gay hotel punch-up in Marazion).

Not a surprise , though the 'preserving God's creation ' bit is rather stomach- turning. This is more Mammon's than God's. But the Church Commissioners have vast holdings of real estate, not just churches and related buildings. That's how they pay the bills, after all. It's not being done by collection plates on Sundays! They have a duty to maximise returns.

The idea that the Church (in any of its guises) exists in order to benefit 'the people' is simply wrong. It exists purely for its own interests. Its interests being controlling as many people and as many governments as possible in order to maintain its existence and grow larger.
In order to achieve this it must – like any business – generate an income. It does so and has always done so by cohesion and corruption. It has coerced governments to make it tax exempt; it routinely uses fear to coerce members of its congregations all over the world to simply give it their hard earned cash; it has seized (by force) vast amounts of land and goods, etc. It has seen an opportunity to make a huge amount of money by selling some it its land to wind farm developers. The wishes of the congregation and all other local residents will be disregarded as usual in its pursuit of money. It's just a shame we can't attach a dynamo to Jesus' spinning body to create a perpetual motion machine. |

Fred, //That's how they pay the bills, after all. It's not being done by collection plates on Sundays!//
I don’t think that is how the church pays its bills. The church doesn’t spend income from its investments if it doesn’t have to. Even the smallest churches have to raise quite large amounts each year to pay the incumbent priest’s wages and expenses. Our little village church, for example, half of which is now maintained by the Historic Churches Conservation Trust, is one in a benefice of five, and alone has to raise around £10,000 per annum, plus any extra money for repairs – and without the help of the rest of the people in the village, the congregation of about 20 would struggle to find that money. The church doesn’t spend much of its own stash. |
