Beckersjay - “... For the record, birdie, jomifl et al, I do not believe that anyone's beliefs or faith deserve derision if they are sincerely held. Including yours, of course...”
What, even the beliefs of a madman? Should those beliefs be respected? To take an extreme example, what if the person in question sincerely believed that the people he murdered in this life would become his slaves in the next? Should we respect his beliefs? Or are there limits to the beliefs we should respect and if so, what are those limits?

Unquestioning acceptance of a person's belief is not necessarily a good thing. In fact, questioning a person's belief can only be a positive thing as it gets everything out in the open so that there are no secrets.
I suspect the reason you made the above statement is that you don't like the fact that we live in a society where your beliefs can be called into question. Unfortunately for the religious, the stranglehold on debate that the Church has had in Europe for the last thousand years or so is finally being prised from its cold hands. Not surprisingly, the very people who were quite happy bullying others into following the Church's doctrines are not happy now that their core beliefs and teachings can be scrutinised and openly criticised for what they are – deeply flawed mumbo-jumbo born of ignorance and fear.
