Vegetarians.

Does anyone know the main reason why people become vegetarian? If it is animal cruelty, why do most vegetarians eat fish, do they regard their deaths for human consumption as not cruel?

Hi flobadob ,
Strict veggies(like me) do NOT eat fish,or the flesh of any other living creature.
There are those(misguided) folks who call themselves demi vegetarians, and these guys eat fish;but they cannot be seriously regarded as veggies.
I don't eat meat etc for two reasons.
1.I object to the cruelty involved in keeping/killing animals for food.
2.I have a moral objection to eating another creature.I mean would you eat Mr Smith from down the road?
I don't(as some veggies do) try and stop other from eating fish or meat if they wish to do so.I just object if they try and force me to do so.

Question Author

I understand your point Pickle but as Elvo ask, would you go so far as to not use any animal by products or those tested on animals?

I try to be as ethical(veggie wise) as it is practicable to be,and I do not wear or use leather products.I also try to buy products that are not tested on animals(as I am male this easier for me than for ladies)
Before you ask,NO I would NOT use drugs that were tested on animals.I am at present taking 3 different medications. When the GP prescribed them I asked him to find out whether they had been tested on animals,2 had,and so he prescribed a different make of medication.

noknowledge,
What animals eat(or for that matter my fellow human beings) is up to them.I am not here to preach, merely to answer flobadob's question.

Sorry noknowledge,
I think I DID answer Elvis' question in my last answer.
I do not wear Leather products(including shoes) for the same reasons that I do not eat meat etc.

Elvis I don't wear plastics shoes, they are a synthetic that you would hard pressed to tell from Leather.
2 of my medications are for my Mental Health(Genetic) condition.
The other (ironically) is statins to lower my chloesterol,as our family are prone to heart attacks. My GP tells me that my veggie diet is fine, and may prevent me from getting the inherited heart disease, but as I say I don't want to preach.

Apart from the above,I have (at 61) never had a days illness(aparts from colds and flu) in all the 30 years I have been a veggie.
What's with the rope belt(I have a synthetic one) I am not into bondage Elvis! LOL

Elvis.
Most veggies eat(free range) eggs ,as this does not involve either cruelty or killing the animal.Much as I love eggs due to my chlolesterol problems I tend to avoid them.
It's not easy being a veggie,as you can see there are all sorts of decisions to be made, some east some not.

Well human beings were given incisors as well as molars, which are functional in ripping and tearing at food - presumably meat, but I admire IaP's stance on being vegetarian.

Elvis, eating eggs doesn't mean 'stopping a chicken's life'. The eggs we buy in shops are, in the main, unfertilised, so would never produce a chick.

I'm vegetarian, I have always rejected meat from being very young. ie. removing the sausage from the pastry of a sausage roll, the pork from a port pie etc. The funny think here is my kids as todlers did the same, my sisters kids also and with a friend yesterday her todler was given a ham sandwich and sure enough she took out the ham and gave it to her mum.
Why is this? Because it's not natural or necessary for us to eat meat.
I don't consume any animal diverities in: whey, lactic acid etc. I don't consume any dairy produce either.
My reason being not animal welfare but because I am conscious of what I put in my body and meat is discusting, fatty, gristle, bones.. eukkk. It's like going over to a cow in a field and taking a bite.
My parents ate meat for every meal, inc tripe, blackpuddings which is enough to put people off meat also.
People think I'm 10yrs younger than I am, have great skin, hair etc and look very healthy.. I can only put this down to never eating meat.
And the chinese have never drank milk or consumed produce from it and are very healthy peoples. Why the government tells us we need milk is beyond me.
