The way I understand it, nerds can be obsessive about anything, while geeks only really get over-excited by technology. Therefore, your average trainspotter or Star Trek continuity error bore is a nerd, but Bill Gates is a geek.
Nerds are book smart, teacher's pets, and socially awkward. Geeks are socially awkward star trekkers and dungeon/dragons masters...probably didn't do well in school. You can be both also.
