Many would do anything to abandon any principle, just to stay alive.

goodlife, I have asked this question on another thread but received no answers. However it relates to your comment to naomi regarding the Bible so perhaps you have an answer.
My question:
Why when devotees of religion quote from the quran or the bible it means exactly what it says, yet when atheist quote a contradictory passage we are told it doesn't mean what it says?

Ratter@ I could say the same about you! You just don't realise what you are throwing away.
Ratter;//Goodlife, you talk a huge load of garbage!!//

Would you please then' care to give us your interpretation of the book of Job?
Do you actually possess a bible in fact?
I do actually have a few Bibles and read them, to be honest I dont see the need to give my views on the book of Job, simply because it is total nonsense, not worthy of any interpretation from anybody!

Ratter@ That's where you are wrong. The account of Job is essential, in conjunction with Genesis 3:1-6 and other scriptures, it reveals the great issue of the righteousness of God in his exercise of sovereignty as well as the manner in which the integrity of God’s servants on earth is involved in the issue. Whether you like it or not, you are involved as is every person who has and is living on earth. You can deny it as much as you like, but at the end of the day you are being judged.
Lol, ok Goodlife, now I'm really worried! ;-)

Vulcan@ This is problem, many people just pluck scriptures to suit what they want it to. The important thing is to use scriptures in context. Many religious leaders are guilty of this plus they say "do what I say, not what I do". Hence people see their hypocrisy and that is why they are now leaving the religions.
Scriptures are not taken literally, there is meaning behind them and that is why a study of the Bible is necessary.
goodlife, thank you for your answer. It raises other questions but I will postpone those for the time being.
Goodlife, I know the story of Job. My opinion of what you bizarrely call ‘the righteousness’ of your God remains.

Illustration, let us say that you are a loving parent with several children in a happy family. Suppose one of your neighbors spreads lies, accusing you of being a bad parent. What if the neighbor says that your children do not love you, that they stay with you only because they do not know any better, and that they would leave if someone showed them the way.

Yes, but how would you prove it? Some parents might react in rage. Besides creating more problems, such a violent response would lend support to the lies. A satisfying way to deal with such a problem would be to allow opportunity for your accuser to prove his claim and for your children to testify that they sincerely love you.

Jehovah is like the loving parent, and Satan fits the role of the lying neighbor.

God did not destroy Satan immediately but permitted all wrongdoers to continue living for a while.

This allowed time for the Devil to prove whether his claim was true so that the issues could be settled. From the start, however, God knew that some humans would be loyal to him and would thus prove Satan a liar. How thankful we are that Jehovah has continued to bless and help those who love him! ( Proverbs 15:3)
Goodlife, //God did not destroy Satan immediately//

As far as I’m aware, God didn’t destroy Satan subsequently either - allegedly. I wonder what God really determined to prove in his appalling treatment of Job. That he was right and Satan was wrong? An omnipotent entity so insecure that it needed to massage its own ego. Strange.
/Scriptures are not taken literally, there is meaning behind them and that is why a study of the Bible is necessary./
Of course..and only you understand the true meaning...how many times have we heard that.
Goodlife, "Jehovah is like the loving parent, and Satan fits the role of the lying neighbor." no he is not! Have you no idea how many families have been broken up due to your ridiculous religion!!

I have a personal friend that outcast by her family at 18 years of age, purely because she dated a non JW.

JW is wrong in so many ways, it divides and corrupts people!!
A loving parent who makes a wager with a lying neighbour, allowing that neighbour to devastate his child’s life in order to prove the child’s love for the parent. Funny sort of parent.

What an advantage for the world of mankind has today, with the Word of God printed in many languages and distributed to the ends of the earth! And, in addition, Jehovah’s Christian witnesses of today are anxious and willing to come into the homes of the people of all world and help them study and understand their own Bibles.

But by far the people are just like the people in the prophet Isaiah’s day; the more you speak to them about the goodness of God and the gift he gave to mankind in his Son, Christ Jesus, the more they prefer not to understand.
Even though they see and hear Jehovah’s witnesses again and again, they refuse to get any knowledge.

They do not want to! So, like Isaiah, true Christians preaching the only worthwhile message, “The kingdom of the heavens is at hand,” will “make the heart of this people unreceptive, and make their very ears unresponsive, and paste their very eyes together, that they may not see with their eyes and with their ears they may not hear, and that their own heart may not understand and that they may not actually turn back and get healing for themselves.”—Isa. 6:10.How true with you on here..
Goodlife, you've gone off the subject of Job then?
Question Author
No, Job reminds us that our problems will not last forever. The Bible says: “We pronounce happy those who have endured. You have heard of the endurance of Job and have seen the outcome Jehovah gave.(James 5:110
Goodlife, how you people deceive yourselves. Jehovah was entirely responsible for Job’s problems. If we were to substitute human beings for God and Satan in this story, God would be judged insane and yet here you are trying to tell us how wonderful he was. Can you really not see the irrationality in what you’re saying?
But this life is little more than flicker of light in the darkness of eternity. What is it we must do to secure eternal life, Goodlife?
The sooner I can join my wife the better.
