If you could turn back time and you had the qualifications to do it, what job would you like to do?
Id like to be a midwife during the day and work for the Samaritans in the evenings or weekends.

Why can't you be a Samaritan Georgiesmum? I'm one and would recommend it to anyone. Provided your over 18 you can apply to your local branch - go on, give it a try!

Id love to do it Maggiebee but i am retired now and registered blind. If i was fit and able i would apply.
Not sure but I can't think of much worse than your choices. Who'd want to listen to wimmin moaning all day and then everyone at it in the evening? I suppose we're all different.
Estate Agent back in the 80s
Apologies, I was making assumptions - something a Samaritan should never do!
Not to worry Svejk - you're one of the biggest moaners on this site yet you expect us to listen to you. You probably wouldn't get through Samaritan selection anyway for which we can all be eternally grateful.

I always wanted to be an RAF fighter pilot.Flying Hawker Hunters or English Electric Lightnings at mach 1. Trouble was my dad was a inverted snob and because my brainy sister went to University to study some airy fairy fine art subject I was expected to go to Cranwell or nothing. ( 2A levels and 5 O levels got you there after selection which included Maths and English)Trouble was I was useless at maths and even entry as a pilot officer without going to Cranwell required 5 o levels including Maths. I couldn't even aspire to a Grade 1 GCSE maths pass which would of been accepted as an O Level pass.
Nowadays the GCSE is so dumbed down I could pass it with flying colours except I would find great difficulty in cocking a leg over the cockpit and even greater difficulty in constantly needing the loo at 30,000ft. :-( The spirit is still there though. I got my private Glider pilot licence.

Do you mean the gentleman relaxing on the beach who constantly got sand kicked in his face?
I wanted to join the police, but was heavily discouraged. Still hacked off about it.
I wanted to join the police but my mum and dad were married
I'm still turning clocks backwards into what they used to look like. Here is a before and after of a 1906 Waterbury movement: http://i61.tinypic.com/hwhda9.jpg

Depends how far back you are going. I joined in the late 60s and retired in the 90s. No way would I encourage my two 30yr + sons to join in this day and age. A very thankless vocation I would suggest.

Funny you should say that. Both my parents are now long brown bread and I never found their marriage certificate. :-)

maggiebee, careful....
Retro When you joined, didn't those who were retired or about to retire say 'I'm pleased that I aren't just starting' Also anybody just joining hasn't seen it from the inside and what they're experiencing is the norm, just as it was with you. Tell me another occupation where you can join in your teens and retire on a pension before you are 50.

Exactly. What I could of accomplished but because of the qualifications required at the time I never achieved my wish. Only public school types who had belonged to University Air Squadrons could become officer pilots at the start of the 2nd WW. When the attrition rate was getting bad it was suddenly realised that grammar school boys could fly as sergeant pilots and soon attain commissions as well as the University entrants.
My sister, bless her, is highly educated with degrees etc but as thick as two short planks when it comes to practical common sense.
