Appropriate Adult.....

What is it and why did Fred West have one allocated? Sounds like something used in Juvenile cases. Anyone know about this?

It was because he allegedly had learning difficulties and was there considered more suitable to have an Appropriate Adult with him. Excellent TV show by the way.
