is it ignorance? is it what they truely believe? Or is it that they have been told (brainwashed) from an early age to think one way? I for one beleive it is all of the above. I mean, to believe the same thing that was taught 3000 years ago to me is just crazy! Do you beleive the world is flat? Do you beleive that Zeus is actually the god of lightning? Do you believe that the virgin Mary was actually a virgin? Well before people knew has to answers questioins through the scientific method...the world was flat, Zeus was a god, and well, sorry folks, but Mary was not in fact a virgin. She was human, and like all humans, could only become pregnant through fornication. Think about it, even the great flood where the story of Noah's arc is derrived occured before they even knew the earth was round! Doesnt that imply that the people who lived then were rather limited in the perception of the world around us. I mean, for someone that could never leave there own town without it being a life endevour, for a person who never knew anything or anyone that lived outside of their own world...a tsunami and flood such as the one that occured recently off the coast of japan could have been considered as a flood of the entire earth. Getting back to my point. I think that religion is outdated and irrelevant to the way most (I hope) people think today. Only recently has technology and our own innovation opened up the doorway to a higher level of thinking. As long as we let the religious zealots and crazies control this world, we will be no better off then the point where we started, in the caves. Wake up. Stop believing things you were told and start looking at evidence. It's all in front of you. You just need to open your eyes!
They do not believe in it because they already have a cherished belief that they would have to drop, or at least modify severely, in order to accommodate it. Their preference is to find things that cast doubt on evolution instead in they hope they may find a critical flaw and thus allow their existing belief to look less unlikely.
Accept that, that sentence could be justified as valid opinion, but not all the post can be.
Implying brainwashing, that believers are crazy (because their beliefs are), referring to religious zealots and crazies. No, not uncivil in the slightest, especially for a discussion on evolution and why some folk don't believe in it.

OG, I’ve no idea who he is, but it seems to me that he’s not stating that they’re brainwashed, but asking if they are – and I see nothing wrong in referring to some people of religion as Zealots or crazies either. There are plenty of both around. Personally I would consider the members of such organisations as the Westboro Baptist church and the perpetrators of 9/11 and 7/7 to be both. Such petty complaints against an outspoken critique smack of the usual expectation that dissenters keep their opinions to themselves out of obligatory respect for religion, but the days when the religious can demand that, and get it, have gone. Religion warrants criticism.
Religious people love their branch of cobblers. Therefore scientific explanation is always going to take a back seat to their brain washing. The theory of Evolution and Natural selection doesn't explain everything but it's pretty close to observation and thus infinitely more plausible that mythical deities from story books but hey ho, people are not logical.

Nor does having acquired the ability to reason guarantee that potential will be embraced, developed and realised within all members of a species in which that ability emerges. Some people may not believe in evolution for the obvious answer that a person has the capacity to make their own choices as to their choice of belief. I do actually believe that Zeus is the God of lightning, I know that lightning is generated by electrically charged ions but I also hold the belief that an invisible Zeus sits in the sky as do the Hindu and Egyptian Gods.
That is my choice, as silly as it seems to you. However you raise a good point of 'brainwashing'. I don't know if you have heard of Laszlo Polgar the psychologist who bought his daughters up as part of an experiment ascertaining whether talent is born or made. He advertised for a wife, had 3 girls, intensively trained them and all three are grand masters in the field of chess.
But it raises the subject that he in effect 'brainwashed' his children to prove his point. He chose the field of expertise not his children.
It is your opinion to state this - 'I think that religion is outdated and irrelevant to the way most (I hope) people think today.' However....

I disagree with you making the comparison that to hold a religious belief adamantly renders you in effect of lower intelligence as you prescribe...'Only recently has technology and our own innovation opened up the doorway to a higher level of thinking.'
You seem to forget that not all scientists are atheists and people can hold conflicting beliefs, that science innovation and progression has been happening ever since the time of the 'caves.'
If people choose to hold harmless beliefs for all their life, in no way impacting upon your life, why does it bother you so much that they choose not to believe in evolution?
Most people in the world believe they live in a democracy...however John Pilgar argues that democracy 'means nothing if its benefits are at odds with American interests.' There are many who question whether democracy is an illusion to keep the majority ignorant of the wishes of the few.
