When were post codes introduced in the United Kingdom?

Not sure when but if memory serves me right Bromley in Kent was the first place to have a postcode (BR1)  

I left London in 1972 and I don't remember the new style postcodes then. I lived in Scotland for a bit and when I returned in April 1974 there they were, all compulsory with GPO adverts to "Remember the postcode!"

 

I could never remember the second part of mine just the first bit that was the same as the old system (N1 isn't hard).
