I saw the Vulcan bomber today fly almost over us, I think it was going back to base from the Bournemouth air show. The video is an old one from YouTube as I sadly didn't have my camera with me today :(
What a great aircraft it is ....... hope it keeps getting the funding to keep it flying.

When I was a kid I often saw them saw them flying into Finningly, they certainly looked the business.

Where's Finningley paddywak? Yes they are a fantastic sight, second only to Concorde and my favourites the Red Arrows!
There's a Spitfire going round here at the moment, you can take a trip alongside it in a helicopter and film it from the air.

Just checked and see that it is now Robin Hood airport at Doncaster, thats interesting, thanks.
Question Author
What now boxtops???? Is it a night flying trip, if so that would be great!
As you say Ann it is now Robin Hood Airport but back in the 60's it was one of the main bases for the Vulcan and Valiant bomber squadrons
There's one down at the old East Fortune Airfield which is now part of the Royal Museum of Scotland - the Museum of Flight - just a few miles from where I live. (there's a Concorde down there too!) It flew in years ago my brother who worked on our local rag got me photos of it landing etc. and the crew who flew it up here. It's a fabulous looking aeroplane, it would be nice if they were still flying instead of in museums
LOL, no I don't mean "now" ... I meant during the day :-)
Question Author
I see (from Wiki) the Vulcan (which does flying displays) is now based at Robin Hood airport, it used to be based here in Leicestershire at Bruntingthorpe.
Fine looking planes as you say but non of them beat the BoBMF. I've seen them many a time and the sight of the Lancaster, Spitfire and Hurricane is something really special.
Question Author
Yes and the noise of them flying overhead too .................
Echo that Paddy, the roar of those Merlin engines fair sets me off!
The Lancaster flew over East Fortune a few years back as a sort of salute to the airfield on the way back from the air show over at Leuchars. Drem was a Battle of Britain fighter base during the last unpleasantness, but East Fortune was also an air base though I'm not sure which kind, and you can still see some of the old buildings in fields at Macmerry which was a sort of satellite base to Drem. I understand that one of those big air ships the R100 or the R101 or something of that ill took off from East Fortune in the '30's
Ann...fabulous.

I took 20 of hospital staff to a Bomber County weekend a few years ago and we stayed at the Petwood Hotel in Woodhal Spa, which as you know was the officers mess of 617 squadron ( Dambusters). Fabulous weekend and by chance I met an old schoolmate of mine and he told me that he joined the RAF on leaving school and he flew Vulcans.
I persuaded him to come as guest speaker to the last night dinner and he was the star of the show with his stories
Fantastic ann - the sight of that huge aircraft taking off sent a shiver up my spine.
We were caravanning near RAF Coningsby this summer (what summer some may ask).
Went to see the planes and while we were there a tethered Spitfire, which had just been serviced, was revved up to full chat. A merlin engine at full chat is a marvellous thing to hear.
Also saw the Lancaster take off and land. Brilliant.

I am a member of the VTTS [Vulcan to the sky] and regularly contribute to help keep it flying. I find it very strange that we have a BBMF that is part of the RAF and yet the Vulcan relies on public donations, I believe the Vulcan should be part of the BBMF. Although, with the exception of the Falklands, the V bomber force [ The Vulcan, Victor and Valiant] never dropped a bomb in anger, they were part of the deterrent which kept Britain safe during the cold war. I also find it strange that we have just one Vulcan still flying, yet the American B52, which had it's maiden flight the same year as the Vulcan, 1952, is still very much part of the American Air Force who intend keeping the them flying until 2040.
its not that big really a boeing 737 is much bigger you can see it parked up at times at robin hood and compare the two
she is a beauty, my o/h and i visited many air shows, always loved seeing the Vulcan and Spitfires, especially flying as opposed to viewing in an aircraft hanger.
