boxing day

I know there is a tradition as to why boxing day is so called but can't remember can anyone enlighten me please?

It's when the 24 hours of being civil to each other proves too much and the in-laws start fighting. Then again,. it could be the Christmas box (gift/money) employers gave to their employees years ago

I think it was traditionally the day when the offertory boxes in churches were emptied and the contents given to the poor but nowadays it goes towards replacing the lead on the roof every time some nasty little wazzock nicks it!

I was told it was called that because people actually opened their presents on boxing day in the past.

Actually it was traditional for people to box up gifts for the poor on the day after Christmas Day hence
