Not absolutely sure but the works of Charles Dickens were serialised in America just as they were here. It's possible that the readers were Dickens' fans waiting for the next part of a book.
Just as an addition to the above, Dickens' works were known in America by the time he paid his first visit there in 1842. It could be that the enthusiastic readers were there to greet the man himself.
