29A The engineer officer's responsibility taken by the navigatior (8) ?E?R?N?S

Presuming the word navigatior (sic) to be a misprint, the answer looks like BEARINGS - but why . . .?

Any offers?

I assume this refers to the bearings on which the engine runs and the directional bearings.
Engineer Officers look after engine bearings; Navigators take bearings on a compass.
Good morning Ancient M, could your M possibly indicate Mariner?
I'm afraid so!

Yes - connection between navigator and bearings is clear, but why 'the engineer OFFICER'S responsibility . . .'. I guess BEARINGS is the correct answer, but the reasoning is not convincing.

MikeF
I think Ancient M will confirm that engine bearings are large steel ball-bearings on which the engine parts move, thus the responsibility of the engineer.
Can't make it any clearer, not being an engineer.
All the bearings in the ship are the responsibility of the engineer officer. The engine bearings, certainly, but equally important the propellor shaft bearings (in a screw driven ship)

Thanks all. BEARINGS it is - but still don't entirely follow the thinking.
