or anything else. (vape, exercise, abstain, drink water,)
Why do we have this paradigm? Why cant we just accept that some people find relief in things that may be a bit different from your own ideas?

Paradigm? You been sniffing the dictionary again, Nailit?
I always accepted the right of other people to smoke till I found they were endangering me as well as themselves. I'm fine with them vaping.

Likewise I'm not too bothered what other things people put in their bodies if it doesn't threaten me. But drunk driving, for instance, is a threat.

I do love my dictioanary JD....
I'm quite happy to accept what choices other adults make in the way they live their life.
I have no issue what strangers to do with their bodies, but I do object if their behaviour impacts on me, my family and friends, or is illegal.
Injecting gives me the heebies, otherwise live and let live as long as they can afford their pleasure.
As long as their choices don't affect others, then it's fine. I'm asthmatic - people smoking/vaping near me affect me. As for the generality: the other bit is that some people 'finding relief in things' can cost the rest of us a lot in the resulting, necessary, medical care - which costs all of us ands clogs up the hospitals. Sorry, but it is true.
We all make choices in life. Personally couldn't give a flying fig what other people do, just so long as it does not affect me or my family.
I don't think it's quite that simple.

Do I object if someone wants to drink themselves stupid?

On first sight, the answer is no, but ...

If that drinking leads them to a night in A & E, or a police cell, then yes I do object, because I pay my taxes so medical staff and the police can look after deserving individuals, not self-harming idiots who can't adopt a mature attitude to their pleasures.
It's amazing how quickly what is and isn't acceptable changes. I hardly ever see anyone smoking now, and it's amazing to think that it's not that long ago that you could smoke on a plane! Someone I was working with travelling round Europe refused to get on a plane because the only seat available was in the row behind 'Smoking'.

I can remember grotty, stinking tube carriages, and Glasgow and London buses practically dripping with nicotine in the winter. Mores and standards can, and do, change very quickly - maybe vaping will be next to be socially unacceptable?
Quite possibly - more and more the only place to be is in your little box away from the possibility of annoying anyone else.
Some of those things can make earning a living impossible. I don't mind supporting people on benefits who have no choice but not because of their life choices. Similarly if choices affect people's control and judgement then I don't think they should be allowed to drive, have kids, pets and so on....I agree with the others....fine where those choices don't affect others, not fine when they do. I am not talking here about people with addiction issues because IMO that takes away choice....still think they shouldn't be driving or being responsible for others though.
oh and so far as the exercise/abstain/drink water/ be veggie/ be vegan type choices, again I don't mind or worry what others do but I do mind when people start proselytising and it gets right up my nose when the proselytising is backed up with cod science
I didn't add the 'as long as it doesn't impact on others' in my first reply - it is a given.
