Andy Murray is to donate his prize money from this week’s Aegon Championships to victims of the Grenfell Tower fire. The world No 1, who plays his first match here on Tuesday against Aljaz Bedene, would earn £347,000 by making a successful defence of a title he has already won five times.

Murray’s plan was confirmed by tournament sources, though his own management team declined to comment on it.

He has been a generous supporter of charities throughout his career and has helped with a number of charitable causes but has never sought publicity for his personal donations.

Well done that man.

Well done to him indeed - and to all who have helped in whatever way they could.
I quite agree. I hope he doesn't lose (he seems to be trailing) and end up sheepishly handing over a fiver.
I agree, it's a grand thing for him to do.
Sadly, looks like the donation will be only about £12,000. Still, I'm sure it will be appreciated!
Oh heck :-(
Is it not going well?
Nope, only his first round fee is going their way, though I bet he tops it off to a considerable sum - he played like a drain.
Not my favourite person but a very commendable and generous act and one which, I do hope, will prompt others to dig deep into their pockets.
He also supported that mate of his who had cancer in a similar way, the mate playing doubles with him at Queens in a charity exhibition with Tin Henman and Ivan Lendl, the proceeds going to the hossie or Cancer Research (I can't remember which it was - or both) about two or three years ago - think it was 2015.
It is a commendable gesture although I think far more sportsmen and film stars/celebrities donate to charity than they are given credit for.
I agree with that sentiment ^
if you gonna give mega amounts like this
dont forget Giftaid folks !

under giftaid the giver can assign tax ( 20% or 40%)
and if 40% ( I think Murray is a more than basic taxpayer) then that £12000 turns into the charity's £20 000

good huh ?
