/// A senior judge has ruled a child molester was rightly given a tougher than normal sentence because his victims were Asian and so suffered more from his crimes. ///

any reason for giving them a longer sentence is ok with me
I can't access your link, so can't read read more about the judge's reasons for his verdict. I can't think of any reason why an abuser of Asian girls should be given a tougher sentence than abusers of other girls.
I saw this article earlier, and knew it'd be posted here and by who too!

seven years for such a heinous crime doesn't seem long though does it? I dread to think how much lower a lesson sentence for such a thing would be.

Sorry you are having difficulties accessing my link but apparently here is the reason.

/// the victims' families feared they would struggle to find future husbands because of the abuse. ///

"victims' families feared they would struggle to find future husbands because of the abuse." Is the reason given, and quite true as well. However I'm not sure that should have any effect on his sentence, and that sentence is quite lenient anyway!
Sorry cross posted.

How very clever of you, but since you saw this article earlier, there was nothing stopping you entering a thread on it. Why leave everything to me?
As I wasn't bothered whether it was posted here or not??

I can see the judge's thinking, but I am entirely with the NSPCC - abuse is abuse, and that is where the punishment should be assessed.

Cultural differences should not affect the law, because it opens an entire culture to indefinable assessments.

By the same token, a 'gel from a high-class family' who was being brought up to be a debutante could advance exactly the same argument - which makes it spurious.

Well I can't. I find it a disgusting comment.
And of course the Rotherham children had such consideration after the abuse they suffered whilst at the mercy of the Asian gangs.

I did say I can see his thinking - I did not say I agreed with it.

I think it is the thinking of a man who knows what he knows of Asian culture from what he reads in books and newspapers - it is utterly repugnant that he should bring such skewed anthropological garbage into a court of law and use it to frame sentencing guidelines.
It is no more serious, abuse is abuse whoever the victim is. The sentence is still not long enough.

/// It will stop her finding future , Husbands or Husband, eh! . How many Husbands??? ///

There were two children involved, so the plural was quite in order.
andy, if you can see the judge's thinking, then you gave time to the notion that non Asian children do not desrve the same justice as Asian children.

That is absolutely not true!

I am capable of looking at a viewpoint that I don't agree with, and understanding it, but that does not mean that I agree with the reasoning behind it.

If everyone only commented on situations they agreed with, the concept of debate would collapse instantly - and this website along with it!

I have a viewpoint on the Holocaust - do you feel that having a viewpoint suggests that I agree with the thinking behind it?

I am sure you have a viewpoint on the murder of random strangers - by your logic, does that mean you provide some level of sanction for it?

I hope this points out the ludicrousness of your statement, and points you towards an apology - which would be appropriate.
Predictable waffle, andy.
