Can anyone tell me when and why our young people began to over use the over word LIKE in their sentences? Was there a moment or a person responsible, or a TV programme or a fashion that I missed at the time .... like?

Why any fashion ?
The meme just gets taken up as each seems to want to seem 'cool' to their mates.
It's like, y'know, like yeah. I've no idea either May
I doubt there was an actual moment - the use of language is constantly evolving and terms dip in and out of fashion ....like.

Not that I would ever use it. ;-)
It's, like, so annoying.

(Image that with a rising inflection and your blood pressure will soar...)
people were doing that in the 1950s, so it's not new.
I notice that a lot of them lately begin a sentence with 'so.'

... so no character or song or you tube moment back at the turn of the century who I can, like blame then?
Who knows? It's similar to people of an older generation saying "he turned around and said..... And she turned around and said...." A comedian did a good spiel about that one, can't remember who, but nowadays they say "he was like...." Just one of those things, like "Can I get.... " instead of "may I have..."
I attribute the phenomena to the fact that the users of tripe such as this have a very limited vocabulary and it's their method of connecting words to form a sentence, while their mind races to find an appropriate word or phrase.

Even more puzzling is how such an annoyance becomes so international in scope. I noticed, as jno intimates, the habit becoming invasive perhaps 10 years ago or so, but was unaware that it had become just as 'fashionable' in the U.K. (and elsewhere) until participating in AnswerBank...

Used, primarily, by those under the age of 18 (at least here in the U.S.) it'll be interesting to see if the speech impediment persists when they are into their 40's and 50's... now that's scary!
That was an OLDER generation ???

If you're looking for someone to blame, Maydup, blame Justin Bieber.

Not that he started any craze for it, just that I don't, like, like him.
Just is, innit?
I always had you down as a Beleieber 2sp.......
We have a beaver doorstep who Mini Boo has named Justin, which we thought quite clever.
Shhhh Eccles, you will blow my cover...
About the same time as they started saying "know what I mean " every sentence. Include "Yeah, but" in there as well.

As intimated by janbee.....It's like what you know, if you know what I mean, like yea, yea. So look you there then.

Hans.
You sounded suspiciously like Yoda then Hans!
@B00....Are you suggesting that I am from another Planet because I fly a Danish flag. :-)
