Just had a guy at the door rabbiting on about the scrappage scheme. Bottom line is I think he was trying to sell me new double glazing. I have heard of the scrappage scheme but can anyone explain it to me simply. Couple of sites seem to think it's a rip off.

You can get new boiler if you are home owner on certain benefits...
two young guys knocked on my door last Sunday afternoon with foreign accents and a clip board I took one look and said -whatever it is no thanks- and they said but we are giving away something free- no thanks- but you must want something free -no thanks and shut the door, I bet it was one of the schemes.
Sorry, MM, the scheme that you refer to has now closed:

There were warnings about double-glazing firms promoting non-existent government scrappage schemes four years ago:

Looks like a good old fashioned scam to me maggie !

Get as many quotes as you can, or as many as you can put-up with. ( there is a limit to how many reps we can allow in our houses, with their smart suits and even smarter talk )

Most double glazing reps are failed second-hand car salesmen. When I put in double glazing a few years ago, I chose a company that I thought was OK and I have no reason to doubt my decision. But a few days before they started work, one of the other reps I saw phoned me up and demanded to know why I didn't go with his company. When I told him who I DID go with, he said that he knew where that company got its glass from and threatened to make sure that company would give me "crap" glass instead of the best quality ! Unbelievable but true.

I ended the telephone conversation in a rapid and very Anglo-Saxon way. This rep by the way, was a recently retired South Wales Police Officer and I complained to the Company and the Chief Constable but I never heard anything further.

Double glazing is a business stuffed full of rogues, so watch your step !
The only scrappage scheme I have heard of was to do with buying a brand new car, but that was a few years ago now.

Thanks folks, I had the feeling it was a scam. SlackAlice, I did have a look at your link, most posts were from 2009 advising to steer well clear.

Just shows how long they've been trying it on!
In our local paper this week the Double Glazing adverts were quoting 'scrappage is back'. Didn't really take too much notice at the time cos don't need windows but it might be what they were trying to sell you.
