In the shrubbery something stirs. Sounds like a cross between a duck's quack and a crow's caw but with the volume turned down. I'm sheltering from the rain beneath the old pine tree whilst all the time the scolding moves eerily above me. Around me is a bed of nettles which twitches each leaf at random as drips fall from the upper branches.

Nettles? Why are there nettles in the shrubbery? Has it really been neglected for that long? Will it ever stop raining? Will that presence above me ever shut up? So many questions and too few answers.

Reality sinks in. Yes, there have been many months of unchecked growth in the shrubbery, but at least it hides the detrius of the Bacchanalian excesses of a past era.

As I accept the inevitability of getting wet and move out from my shelter, a complaining squirrel makes its escape from the branches via the potting-shed roof. I must also make my escape in order to prepare for the morning's MM Links Game.

It starts with an intro at 8:45am (in Q&P) followed at 9:00 by the four link words to be matched. This month's game is being set by 'The Ice Queen' (aka OntIce) from her palace in Canada. Every answer has a word length from 4 to 8 letters and after each link is detected, bonus points are available for the following two minutes. The best advice then is to get in early for the best chance of those bonus points. The game ends at 7pm Sunday.

Whilst you are at it, Why not have a go at the sister game of the KM Links, managed from Australia by Seekeerz. It kicks off at 7am but there is no rush there because bonus points are not time dependent - play it any time over the weekend. The KM Links is tied to the GK Crosswords in The Daily Telegraph on Saturday and Monday.

Enjoy,

Evening all...there are some odd objects found amongst those nettles! :-)
Hi Gen, I think the squirrel has escaped from Jan's garden. I am coming into shrubbery tonight with my trusty chain saw and I will clear it up ready for a party. I have a lady from Stockport with me and she has got a lawn mower so let battle commence !!!
You may find some nuts Kay! :-)
Kay and a chain saw!!!! the mind boggles
My accountant son asked if we had a circular saw when he moved into his house
we all puzzled over what he wanted a circular saw for...... to cut a round hole ofcourse!!!! he is very clever really just not in a practical way!!
right has any one took the emptys back??? what can we get for them??
You're going back a bit Jan!..money back for the empties. :-)
My understanding is that somewhere in the Shrubbery, Kay is baking potatoes in a subterranean microwave.

Pommes de terre is one thing but pommes sub terre is quite another.

The cuisine de Lichfield is a mystery.

just plug it in and get the glasses
now we need the nibbles
are we aall camping out tonight
Kay is it spuds all round???
Jan, I cut down the trees in my garden with a chain saw (until my children found out and banned me!) I am pretty handy with a saw too.
Don't mention empties.....got a certain person from Stockport downstairs on her laptop.....I have had to come upstairs as floor etc around her is covered in empties !!!!! Wine bottles !!!!!!
Strix...she poured a bowl of beans all over the lawn! She said we were eating al fresco....

Hic....where's my glass gone....
Jan...shall I| fetch the deep fat fryer out and we can make chips.

Mind you ....Kay living near a cathedral might think a deep fat friar is something else!
Do you mean a chipmunk ????
That was quick Kay! She thought of that as she ran up the stairs!
Who said the art of conversation is dead?
Kay is reading what I write and running back up stairs to answer me....she could just speak! :-)))
Evening all, fun and games in Lichfield tonight. Baked pots and baked beans on the menu I understand!!
If you crazy lot could spit out the corks just for a minute and concentrate on the really important things in life - have any of you had a look at the new Generalist? And can you make any sense of it? Hicc...
Oh Pauline never thought of that !! Thought we had to talk via computer as it is AB. I could always carry it downstairs but it's not a lap top.......or you could sit on the floor up here.........just a minute I am coming back downstairs...................................
..........................
The poor dog keeps following Kay, and is getting dizzy!
Aqa...not done one for ages! Kay says ask her, she's on the ball tonight.
That rustling in the undergrowth might be me......after a weird couple of days on AB I'm relieved to be back among a sensible crowd (well, almost!) in Q&P. I've brought a pair of rusty secateurs and some WD40, so I'm all prepared to help with the clearing-up operation.
