Hi pussnboots , I would like to have enough faith in the university or college education to hope that they do really know , just like I hope Brian knew who Shakespeare was.
I find their lack of knowledge unbelievable . :-) xx
You find that surprising? What about the Isle of Wight must be a country because you have to go across water to get there.
Okay, go on, where is Australia?
I've got to hold my hands up - I have been through the entire education system and have just qualified to be a teacher - and I have no idea where Africa or Austrailia is! So in answer to your question - it may be the education that's pap, not the intelligence of the two girls!
What do you teach?

Diddleydonk I hope you are joking, if you are not then I wouldn't want you to teach my kids.
I'm not joking at all. I teach music - why the hell would I need to teach any of my kids where Austrailia or Africa are on the globe? It is 7 years since I studied any of that... and I can't see why not knowing that deems you as not being intelligent!

Get your kids in a classroom with me teaching music and they'd leave the room a damn sight more intelligent than they entered it. Only on the music front - but even so, they'd have LEARNT in my lesson. Get over yourself!

Well , I hope you control your temper better when you teach!

Let's put it this way. The children I teach hold 100 times more manners than your good self! For starters, they are polite. Secondly, they are not judgemental. Thirdly, they appreciate that they are there to learn music. Fourthly, they do not judge intelligence based on whether you can place a country on a map.

Need I continue?

I have all the patience and understanding in the world with children. They are full of certainty, yet very vulnerable. They are thrilled by the smallest of things and, ironically, devestated by even smaller things. They cannot thank you enough when you go out of your way to help them; but they also rarely appreciate the effort and time you put into just one of teaching them. It's all very rewarding and fulfilling when you watch these people grow and become young adults.

If you feel content in judging me based on my georgraphical skills, go ahead. But I doubt if you came and observed me teach a lesson, or in a form session, or one-to-one with a child who has just found out that their grandmother has died, you would have very much to criticise me on.

I stress again, get over yourselves.
Diddleydonk... I have masses of respect for the profession you do. I for one would not have the commitment or patience..

... But to not being able to point to Australia on a map is dire. You do not need an in depth knowledge of Geography to be able to point out the Worls major countries.
I now understand from Diddlybonk why student gades are getting better, the teachers are getting thicker.
" It's all very rewarding and fulfilling when you watch these people grow and become young adults"

According to your good self you've only just qualified!!

And you're telling me to get over myself.

Also I merely asked you what you taught , how is that rude?

Gades ?

Wow diddly why are you so aggressive. It is 40 years since I left school and the fact that I can still point to all the continents of the world is amazing don't you think.
DiddleyDonk -congratulations on qualifying as a teacher. I do hope the children you meet are not judgemental , as your English and Geography skills would give them a certain amount of ammunition. Do you not teach music from different cultures? Or do you only have to worry about local tunes? I have been a teacher for a while now ,and whilst your attitude towards children is admirable , your lack of knowledge is worrying.
1. Find me a quote which highlights aggression.
2. I did not realise I was also being judged on English - I use internet forums socially, not as a means of perfecting my grammar.
3. I took English literature and language at A level and earnt grades A and B respectively.
4. Yes I do teach world music. This involves highlighting traditions of the particular country being studied; festivals, occassions, religious events etc. Whilst I could not say off hand exactly where these countries are in the world, I would certainly do my research to enable me to inform pupils correctly in my lessons!
5. Lack of knowledge? Do please ellaborate.
6. Yes I did just qualify and graduate. I also freely admitted a weakness, which you good people (all with no flaws in your knowledge, I'm sure) took judgement on!

Let's go back to basics - we are discussing the fact that a music teacher cannot name off hand where countries are in the world?! Please. You don't gain qualified teacher status unless you work your backside off.

Throughout the past year I have worked harder than ever in my life. I strive to ensure my pupils are learning the maximum musical knowledge possible. I incorporate, english, maths and ICT into all my lessons. I will always stay late to ensure pupils meet crucial deadlines. I am now responsible for running 11 extra curricular music groups. I have introduced 16 pupils to a local music service and, as a result, they have just returned from a 10 day tour of America. Yet you people are more concerned about the fact that I cannot tell you off the top of my head where Austrailia is? What a waste of a year that was then! I'll hang up my hate now!

When you are quite finished with your rude comments and insults, feel free to return to your discussion on Big Brother.
Worked backside off to become qualified teacher!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Behave yourself. Anybody can get a teaching degree. Piece of pi55.

You are a disgrace to the teaching proffession
A degree in recorder playing, how useless is that.
DiddletDonk , I appreciate how hard it is to train as a teacher now. I know many NQTs who are heading for a breakdown/change of career. Whether you use these sites socially or otherwise, a certain standard of spelling and grammar is expected , particularly from contributors outside the teaching profession.
I believe you asked me to elaborate, I hope this is sufficient and conclusive.
This is very funny. A teacher who does not know where Australia is.

Itr is like going to the Doctor with piles and he doesn't know where your @rse is.

Made my day doddleybonk.
