Brexit was decided in 2016 and implemented 18 months ago, surely they've had ample time to apply to the UK or go back to the EUSSR? Labour want the deadline extended, if they didn't do it in 18months what makes them think they'll do it now?

Labour looking for minority votes in the future.

They seem to have missed the point "Ministers say anyone who applies on time will have their existing rights protected while their case is heard."

And as you say TTT, they have had long enough. Same applies to the ex-pat Brits whining abroad.

YMB: "Same applies to the ex-pat Brits whining abroad. " - yep plonkers, they've had the same mount of time, apply to stay there or burger off back. Personally I'd rather they stayed there.
me too.
It isn’t of course as simple as that.
I don’t think the scheme has been in operation for much more than a year and it sounds like a bit of a pigs ear
Question Author
so a year aint long enough ich? who are these people ?
Anyone who came here legally from the EU pre-Brexit should have an automatic right to stay without having to jump through government imposed bureaucratic hoops.

diddly: "Anyone who came here legally from the EU pre-Brexit should have an automatic right to stay without having to jump through government imposed bureaucratic hoops. " - that was the original position but your beloved EUSSR started all the admin cobras so we had to do the same. Awe you didn't realise that anything they can do we also can do? Bless! Blame your god in Brussels!
If you read your own link it explains the problems people have been having.

Tho given all our other problems if a few Hungarians and Germans fail to sign up for this I shan’t personally be losing any sleep over it

ich, were? all I can see is "should this" and "shouldn't that", do explain.
Who are these people ?
These people are those like my son who has been here since he was six weeks old and is now forty.Born in the Netherlands he had to take his father's nationality. His passport ran out at the start of the pandemic and he was unable to travel to London to the embassy to renew it therefore his online application was refused. He still can't get an appointment so went through the Windrush scheme but he still had to travel from Norfolk to Lunar House in Croydon to be fingerprinted and have an iris/biometric scan.He now has settled status thank goodness. He could of course apply for British citizenship but at over a grand to do so ,why should he because once he gets his passport renewed he still has freedom of movement, something denied to an awful lot of people due to Brexit.
They seem happy to have taken his income tax all the years he's worked since leaving school ,no questions asked !
My husband had to go through mountains of paperwork to find a letter granting him leave to remain in 1975. Good job he kept it or he would have had to got through the same bullshine.
TTT - I have no idea what you're talking about other than your usual anti-EU rant. English friends of ours who have settled in France haven't had to jump through hoops.

shaney: "Born in the Netherlands he had to take his father's nationality. His passport ran out at the start of the pandemic and he was unable to travel to London to the embassy to renew it therefore his online application was refused." - err no he did not if you are UK then he could have taken yours. What is the real reason?
Dutch law at that time and when I wrote to home office they also said in my case any children would automatically take their father's nationality (German). I was just the child bearer :)
Question Author
..."I was just the child bearer :) " - and you like these people?
Tora- //and you like these people?//

Instead of that, how about offering an apology for calling the lady a liar before?
Question Author
I will when I get the true facts, where was the child born?
I'm having a joke for goodness sake . Lighten up.

Probably for the best Shaney, I expect having a relationship with a German is anti-British.
You want the true facts. Ikazia Ziekenhuis Rotterdam.
Do you want me to copy and paste his birth certificate ?
How dare you question me and call me a liar .
