Two pair- W(arnley) inside top +air(atmosphhere)
Only thing I can see for the first one is Two Pair, but doesn't sound right!
Redeem?
Question Author
Can't believe you can both be wrong! But I wonder what it means.....
Question Author
Had thought of redeem but couldn't see the link between clue and answer. Could be that I am impercerptive without food.

Question Author
yes, it's about alternatives and pairs.
Redeem

Red + Orang(e) Priz(e) su(m) finalists

If the 'previous' referred to 'Red'?
2: addeem

in Chambers as an obsolete word meaning to award
Question Author
But given this I still don't see how to derive Two Pair from anything in Braine's novel
Much better, thank you.
Question Author
Any poker in the novel or is this barking up the wrong tree entirely?
Question Author
Redeem works absolutely.
addeem is worth considering too
Go for ADDEEM- work perfectly as bibblebub explained
I agree , following Bibblebub's intervention

Add + Orang(e) Priz(e) su(m) finalists
Question Author
I think it must be addeem on second thoughts as Sounds like there's something immature in Melville's character is Rudd rather than rude. The Perreaus and Mrs Rudd seems to be the link.
For 21d BUDD works better: "something immature" = bud.
