This will make sense only to those who've done, are doing, this puzzle. I have completed the grid and thought I had got the theme -but the 'work' I've got in mind does not have the required number of letters. Can anyone confirm that it is a musical, rather than a literary work? Thanks.

Definitely musical. If perchance you are two letters short, consider the format it appeared as.

Thanks - I thought I was two letters short. I'll have another stare at the grid (I think I know what the 'format' you refer to is). I have two lines connecting, it's the third that's holding me up!
Question Author
Have got the work and format and have carried out the first of the instructions - time to tackle the rest.
Hi Never,

I have completed the grid etc but am unsure about the second part of the first instruction.

I am assuming it refers to the 'work' referred to in the preamble - but its' a little confusing because they also had a work that was called 'Work'.
Question Author
I've not got much further. I thought I had the first part of the instruction done (going from 1A to 45A), but haven't quite worked out what to do next.
(I've gone to 45A as 40-45 didn't seem to work if I used it for the next part). Following the first instruction was quite satisfactory, so I hope it's correct.
From 1 to 45 is a two part instruction.
(5,3,6,4,3,3)
Question Author
Thanks for that, boreas - I think my 3,3 must be wrong, I'll need to check. I had the same configuration of letters, didn't realise it was two instructions - all I did was 5,3,4,6,4.
I thought 1 to 45 ac was a three part instruction
No Kobnut,

It tells you to do something to two entries.

1D to 38D is two instructions, each of two words.
Sorry Boreas but I think you will find it is three. Your (5,3,6,4,3,3) is only 24 letters while there are 26 across clues.
You're right - I missed out a 2 letter abbreviation.
So it should be:
5,3,6,4,2,3,3.
And I see what you mean about 'three'
I love this Inq. There's one clue which I'm unsure of, but it doesn't matter! Fab.
(I suppose that counts as a bit a hint to the instructions.)
It wil be very interesting to see how they handle this completed grid on
fifteensquared.
A nice little ambiguity on the RHS is the best bit.
Any one else unsure of how to carry out the penultimate instruction?
I assumed it requires horizontal lines of appropriate colours drawn through 25A
Re the very last instruction - it is a bit ambiguous - could be all the grid! If jsust the 16 + a few then why bother carry out the first instruction from the across clues?
To create the 'representation of the work' you need to end up with 19 white squares (blanked out - say with tipped) and 4 coloured squares.

The whole of the rest of the grid needs to be blacked out to form a background.

Although, once you know what's required, you can imagine it without actually following the instructions.
