when I was at school, albeit a long time ago, male teachers would always be in suits, collar and tie and females be dressed smartly, now it seems that anything goes, jeans and t.shirts, flip flops or trainers, just generally not what i'd call smart. do others think the same or am I being old fashioned in thinking that dressing smartly goes some way to respect?

I will probably be called old fashioned but I dislike teachers etc looking so scruffy. I always worked in the public sector and tried to look reasonably smart at work. I feel it is a mark of respect to dress smartly.
I am quite surprised by your observation, Gina. Do not see teachers on a day to day basis, so I cannot comment on that. I do have some friends who are teachers, and they are required to dress "smart casual", as I understand it.

And Flip Flops are a crime against humanity for anyone. Wearing them is about the only thing I would consider the death penalty for :)

lazy gun, why are you surprised by my observation??

I would like to add, men wearing socks with sandals.
gina...absolutely correct...........long haired, unwashed and unshaven individuals, many, but not all of them.
This also applies to other professions...e.g doctors and lawyers.

Boto, totally agree.
You are being old fashioned, even in offices people hardly wear suits and ties nowadays. We have dresss down Fridays and currently de rigeur is to wear shorts, flip flops and hawaain shorts (not I would add).

I work in schools and never see male teachers in jeans , t shirts or flip flops. I have seen female teachers in summery tops/skirts or dresses with sandal type shoes but generally they look smart. In this weather it is awful teaching wearing formal clothes all day in a classroom without air conditioning.
All the schools that I have contcact with have staff who are dressed smartly.

I have never seen any teacher of either gender in jeans or flip-flops.

I do think that a dress code is important for certain professions - teaching being one of them.

If you are dressed as a professional, you will think and act like a professional, and you will be seen as and treated as a professional.
I surely explained quite clearly in my post why I was surprised at your observation Gina. Which part of it did you not understand?

I will try it again. It surprises me because I had thought that a common dress code of "smart casual" applied to teachers. Although I do not meet with them on a day to day basis, I do have several friends who are teachers, and they most definitely have basic sartorial standards to adhere to.
At Mini Boo's school, the male teachers tend to wear the school polo shirt, albeit a larger size (!) and trousers, or in the case of the PE Teacher, shorts. None of them wear jeans, tshirts and flip flops. The women ones have taken to wearing summery dresses, think tea dress style, and sandals, but again they look presentable.

Our headmistress would have a coronary if they wore anything she considered scruffy, and probably have them shot, she's a formidable woman!
I have met loads of teachers, I have yet to see one that was dressed inappropriately
Time was when teachers also wore gowns, apparently.
Smart casual should be the rule here, unless its Eton. Who would put a Teacher in thick Harris Tweed jacket in this heat !

I am much more concerned about the fact that so many kids are coming out of school after 11 years and still can't string a sentence together, or manage simple arithmetic.
tonyav, black socks with sandals, aaggghh
teachers should be smart, it doesn't have to mean blokes wearing collar and tie, suited and booted, but it does mean not looking like they have been dragged through a hedge backwards.
mikey, going on some young people i have spoken with, and some of the neighbours children, i do wonder that the money that has been spent on their education has all been wasted. Its not even teen speak, but such foul language, from 4 or 5 year olds,
I'm also surprised by the question. i see teachers quite a lot and have never seen one dressed in jeans or flip flops. But that's not to say they don't exist I suppose.
That said I think suits is OTT. The teachers at my school (quite a while ago) were by no means all in suits and it was quite a strict place.
In my son's school all the male teachers wear suits with shirt and tie, the jacket gets removed during lessons in hot weather, the females have to be dressed smartly too, there is a ban on jeans, canvas trousers, leggings and shorts for all staff.

pleased to hear it daffy
There is also a very strict pupil uniform code, you can hardly expect the kids to take pride in their appearance and adhere to the rules if the teachers are walking around looking all casual and scruffy can you?!
