One of the harder EVs of late, I think, harder for me than Listener this week. I have a full grid but enough uncertainty about the extra letters that I have no idea yet as to the quote or author. However, the method of entry of the "other" answers can be deduced easily enough. If football this afternoon is less than compelling I will go back and figure it all out.
St Louis Cardinals - champions of Major League Baseball! Big parade, etc in StL today.
Agreed, dr b, tough for an EV, though I made it much harder for myself by being slow-witted in seeing what was going on. Some clues certainly wouldn't be out of place in a Listener, e.g 16ac. The sloppy editing doesn't help - 34ac should be (3), as should 20dn. Made more difficult by more than one choice of extra letter in several clues, but it all falls out correctly in the end. A new quote on me
Hello all,
I managed to solve some of the clues that needed modification, and noticed a similarity between their contents. That lead me quite quickly to a word that I looked up in ODQ, and straight to the quote! Groaned at the reference to the title! In turn that allowed me to solve the rest of the clues and populate the grid.
Yes, k, game 6 was historically gut-wrenching - no team had ever come back from so many deficits to win a World Series game. I think the events would have been rejected as a Hollywood script on the grounds of implausibility.
Thanks dr b, assuming of course your initial comment referred to me rather than the quote! Hopefully, if setter and my brain cells are aligned, I'll be around for the next EV, after that I'll be missing for a couple of challenges, seeking sunshine a fair way south of you!
Belated hello to all. Yes much more tricky this week. Pretty much followed the drb path and had a full grid before working out the quote and why I was doing what I had not. Very impressive grid - I like the 4 way rotational symmetry rather than the ususal. Thanks MynoT
Cigarette knowledge from my last drag in 1974 led me to the wrong one - both on the Monololy board but I wasted ages on the quotation having chosen the wrong one.
