It's Scots dialect, and is usually taken to mean that many a little thing makes a big thing (eg if you save your pennies, they'll grow into pounds). The problem is that in Scots dialect "mickle" and "muckle" both have the same meaning - a lot or much. The proverb should probably be "Many a pickle makes a mickle".

And, mickle and muckle come from the Swedish or more generally Scandinavian mycket, meaning the same; much or a lot. There are loads of words used in Scotland, The North East and Yorkshire that are of Nordic origin, think of any ?
